| Managing the WLAN at Intel | |||
| (Wednesday, 05 December 2007) Written by Bryan Wargo | |||
| I had the pleasure to record a podcast with Ray Sliteris of Intel to discuss how they manage their internal wireless LAN on a global basis. Managing over 6,000 access points and controllers is a pretty huge task for any corporation; these guys have the added benefit of working for a company that is a main driver behind the entire WiFi industry. A few interesting items that particularly caught my attention: 1. Last year they were almost 100% autonomous access points and now they are about 25% converted to a controller based approach. This migration will take them several years to move entirely to a thin AP model. My guess is most organizations are like this, they would very much like to take advantage of the “latest and greatest” but due to organizational inertia and network size it takes a while to make any radical changes. 2. The biggest challenges they faced in deploying a network of this size were creating consistent configurations and having a global network view. 3. 802.11n is not a big push for them. They are testing this new technology out in a few areas but they see this as a 2009 production deployment type of technology. The big business drivier for Intel will not necessarily be the additional throughput but rather the improved connection reliability inherent with MIMO . Please take a listen to the podcast and let me know what you think! | |||

| 60 Minutes investigates the theft of millions of consumer credit card pins and numbers from TJX. This story will not go away. A very interesting take on whether the credit card companies are at fault as well. Here is the link: http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=3538299n | |||

| Wi-Fi Phobia | |||
| (Wednesday, 07 November 2007) Written by OJ Jonasson | |||
| Attended a ISACA Chapter meeting this week - attended by about 20 IT security specialists - mostly CISA's and some CISSP's. The main topic was the state of Payment Card Industry -Data Security Standards compliance, i.e. protection of Visa Card information by merchants, payment processors and acquirers. When the subject of wireless use by came up, there was a resounding silence in the room. This suggests several things, namely: i.) a genuine lack of Wi-Fi knowledge within this hard core IT security community; and ii.) an obvious phobia surrounding the use of any form of Wi-Fi by merchants, payment processors or acquirers. The recent TJX debacle was cited by the meeting speaker as a primary example of the universal problems with Wi-Fi. One of attendees, the IT Security Head of a $1B local business, became skittish when I asked him if they utilize any Wi-Fi - he apologetically acknowldeged they do have several applications but intend to remove and replace them with trusted wire links. Apart from myself, there wasn't a single CWNP in the room & no one at our table knew what the CWSP designation on my business card meant. This apparent lack of knowledge and understanding, poses a huge barrier to the sensible use of Wi-Fi in modern day business applications. Somehow, we need to close this gap by getting to these IT security folks and educating them. Far too many of these highly influential technology advisors are still back in the dark ages of Wi-Fi technology. | |||

| Infometics reports that the small size businesses and organizations will drive the growth of 802.11n Wi-Fi networks. But the adoption among small firms won't be evenly spread; certain verticals like the healthcare, education, and small business sectors will be the most enthusiastic adopters of the emerging 802.11n Wi-Fi standard.
