There’s been a great deal of debate in the past few weeks about whether municipalities should deploy city-wide Wi-Fi networks. I strongly feel that with the right business model, city-wide Wi-Fi networks make a lot of sense. For example, a Wi-Fi network that covers a 230 square-mile area in Tucson is enabling ER-Link, a video-based Emergency Medical Services (EMS) telemedicine system, and providing a network infrastructure for traffic signal management, which cuts the city’s telecommunication costs by $200,000 a year.
